The Republic of Moldova declared its independence on August 27th, 1991, being formerly a republic within the USSR. A constitution was adopted on July 29th, 1994.
The political system of the Republic of Moldova is a parliamentary republic with autonomous legislative, executive and judicial branches. The parliament elects a president, who acts as the head of the state. The president appoints a prime-minister as the head of government.
The Republic of Moldova has an unicameral parliament, and under the Constitution is the supreme body exercising legislative power in the Slovak Republic, it is the highest legislative authority of the state. The Parliament has 101 members elected for 4-year terms in direct elections with secret ballots. The members of the Parliament are elected from party lists.
The government consists of ministers selected from the political party or parties which have a majority in the Parliament. The Government of the Republic of Moldova is the supreme body for exercising executive power. The Government is formed on the basis of parliamentary elections. The Prime-minister is appointed by the President of the Republic of Moldova. The Prime-minister will assemble a cabinet of ministers and will request the vote of confidence from the Parliament.
The President of the Republic of Moldova is the head of state and guarantees the state’s national sovereignty, independence and the territorial integrity. The President is elected by the Parliament with at least 61 votes out of a total of 101. He is limited to two terms of four years each.
The Constitutional Court of the Republic of Moldova is the supreme body of constitutional jurisdiction. It is independent of the legislative, executive and judicial powers. It guarantees the supremacy of the Constitution, ensuring that the principle of the separation of powers in the state is realized. The Constitutional Court is composed of six judges elected for a period of six years. Two of them are named by the Parliament, two by the Government and two by the Superior Council of the Magistracy.
